Ski Instructor Level 1

The Level 1 ski instructor course and exam are the first steps towards becoming a professional ski instructor. After passing the exam, the level 1 ski instructor is authorized to teach ski lessons independently with supervision of a state-certified ski instructor. The contents of the Level 1 course are centered around structuring a beginner group or private lesson, teaching beginners or intermediate skiers how to ski as well as improving
their skill set.

Only the completion of both parts of the course, part 1 and part 2 and a successful exam, lead to the Level 1 ski instructor qualification. (Exemption for part 1: a 50-hour teaching experience proof from a DSLV certified professional snow sports school)

Process

Part 1 – 2 days

Participation in Part 1 is waived on upon proof of a 50-hour teaching experience form from a DSLV certified professional snow sports school.

Part 2 and exam – 4 days
After attending part 1 and 2 of the course and successfully passing the exam you will obtain the qualification “Ski Instructor Level 1“. For additional information see “Part 2 and exam: course schedule and information“ below.

The course and exam takes place on snow, on groomed terrain. This includes ski improvement and teaching improvement. Some theory sessions/ units can be held indoors on the ski area premises (i.e.: lodge, conference room, etc.).

Mandatory further training “Teaching sustainable outdoor sports“

  • Costs – € 50,- for all Level 1 participants
  • Register – Register with Natursport Akademie (NAka) via the link below. This is not possible on a trial basis.
    Important! Please include your course number or DSLV-ID. You will find the course number on your invoice, your DSLV ID is your registration number, which you received during the booking process when you first registered.
  • Duration of the course – Allow approx. 8-10 hours to complete the course. As soon as you start on the e-Learning portal, you have 4 weeks to complete the course. After that your registration will be voided. (You will then have to re-register and pay again).
  • Modules – All modules must be completed in sequence. It is not possible to skip individual modules.

  • Certificate–The certificate you receive must be presented to the course conductor on the day of the exam. Please do not send it to the DSLV office.

Am I suitable for ski instructor Level 1?

In addition to an enthusiasm for skiing and teaching, you should have the following skills and abilities:

  • Confident turning on “black“ groomers in a parallel ski position, maintaining sporty and controlled speed
  • Some experience in dealing with groups and enjoy teaching

Admission requirements and required documents

  • Completion of the 16th year of age
  • Participation in training part 1 is necessary in order to attend training part 2 and the examination and to be able to take part in the examination. Alternatively: apply for a waiver by providing a 50-hour teaching experience proof at a DSLV certified professional snow sports school.
  • Theoretical self-study to prepare for the course. At least 16 TU (teaching units), self-directed, no written proof required. Completing the online theory exam also counts as self-study.
  • Sufficient knowledge and fluency of written and spoken English

    Documents that must be submitted to the DSLV 15 days before the start of the course
  • Proof of first aid training of at least 9 TU (teaching units), not older than two years at the start of Level 1 course.
    Completion of online first aid courses is not accepted.
    The following applies to all DSLV courses: First aid courses in accordance with DGUV Regulation 1 must be completed as face-to-face events. The aim of every first aid course is to provide first aiders with comprehensive skills in emergency situations. Particular emphasis is placed on practical exercises. For this reason, online first aid courses are excluded (see DGUV – FB EH – Training – FAQs, link: DGUV). This is also pointed out in the provider’s FAQs (https://erste-hilfe-kurs-online.de/faq).
  • A photo (biometric not required) as part of the online application or in JPEG format via email to lehrgang@skilehrerverband.de
  • 50-hour teaching experience proof at a DSLV certified professional snow sports school if only part 2 and the exam are being completed. Waiver: 50-hour teaching experience proof at a professional ski school

    Documents that only needs to be presented on the day of the exam
  • Successful completion of the DSLV online theory exam at www.dslv-theorie. After successful participation please print out or save a PDF on your mobile device of the certificate and present it to the course conductor on the day of the exam, please do not send it to the DSLV office.

Participation in part 1 of the course can be waived if proof of 50 hours of work experience in a DSLV certified professional ski school, confirmed by the ski school director (state-certified ski instructor), is available. This proof must be submitted to the DSLV office at lehrgang@skilehrerverband.de at least 15 days before the start of the level 1 course. If you would like to take part in part 1 despite having a waiver due to teaching experience, the course fee is reduced from € 200.00 to just € 100.00. Waiver: 50-hour teaching experience proof at a DSLV certified professional ski school

Which equipment do I need?

  • Helmet (mandatory)
  • Back protector (recommended)
  • We recommend a full-length all-mountain or giant slalom (GS) ski, radius 13-21m), waist width 70 to 88 mm (we expressly point out that the use of a short slalom carver is not recommended for training and assessment)
  • We encourage you to bring your own teaching aids.

Of course, you can also take part in the training and exam with your current equipment. If so, you should make sure that your equipment is in good condition and optimally prepared.

DSLV – Teaching Set

An eventful lesson is the is one of the key aspects of your daily work as a ski instructor. The DSLV teaching set is equipped with the most important tools that you can use sensibly at all learning levels, regardless of the age of your students.

Part 1 – course schedule and information

Motor skills I – introduction to DSLV skiing philosophy, situational skiing technique and technique structure, familiarization with regulatory movements

Motor skills II – introduction to the main movements, working out the corridor widths and defining the speeds

Methodology I – introduction DSLV teaching philosophy, workshop “GREEN learning level”,
course conductor teaching demo – short practice teaches

During part 1 of the course, the Green learning level is being elaborated and trained.
This can be waived under a certain condition. Proof of 50 hours of teaching experience) at a DSLV certified professional snow sports school is required. Waiver: 50-hour teaching experience proof at a DSLV certfified professional snow sports school). The proof of teaching experience for the exemption of Level 1 course part 1 must be submitted to the DSLV office up to 15 days before the start of the course so that participation in part 1 can be waived.


For best possible and personal preparation the DSLV recommends completing both the teaching experience and part 1 of the course. A reduced course fee of € 100 is payable for voluntary participation in part 1 of the course. The course certificate can be sent by email to lehrgang@skilehrerverband.de. Please inform the DSLV when registering for part 1 of the course if you are taking part in this course voluntarily, i.e. with proof of the hours completed.

Part 2 and exam – course schedule and information

During part 2 of the course, only the blue learning level is being elaborated and trained. If part 1 has been waived because a 50-hour teaching experience proof is available, the training obligation in the green learning level lies with the issuing DSLV certified professional snow sports school. The green learning level can also be tested in the exam.

Methodology IV – workshop “task variations”, course conductor teaching demo, short practice teaches – practice teach lesson topics assigned to all participants for the following day

What do I need to consider as an exam retaker?

In accordance with the training and examination regulations for ski instructors Level 1, failed examination parts can be repeated at the earliest 4 weeks after failing the previous examination. To do this, it is necessary to re-register for the relevant part of the exam (the exam part to be repeated must be entered in the comments field on the registration form). Repeaters have their own “repeater tickets“ for the relevant parts of the exam. The fee is € 45.00 per exam part to be retaken.

Participation in part 2 of the course for exam preparation is possible for exam repeaters, in this case you register for part 2. Please enter „repeater“ in the comments field on the registration form. It is not possible to register for individual training days during part 2 of the course.

Membership after passing the Level 1 exam

After successfully completing the Level 1 exam, you will receive access to your personal digital snow sports instructor card and become a member of the German Ski Instructor Association (DSLV). This gives you access to reduced course fees for all further courses and many other services. The Level 1 membership fee will not be invoiced until July 1st the following year. The examination fee includes free membership until the end of the current season. To provide the ID card, we require a current photo in which the face is large enough to be recognized, send to the DSLV office as a JPG file (max. 2MB).
